Hey guys, it’s D here! Allow me to tell you a story. Please know that I am chuckling as I write this. Hopefully it will both educate you on how to dose (or NOT dose) homemade edibles, as well as allow you to laugh at my expense!
Over the summer, we ran a contest called The Great Healing Co. Pot Brownie Bake Off (you can get the winning brownie recipe HERE). It was epic! We asked our amazing customers to send in their best pot brownie recipes, we selected the top seven and I baked THEM ALL!
First, I had to cook off a batch of cannabis infused coconut oil (recipe can be found HERE) and cannabutter (recipe HERE). I had to make 6 cups worth of cannabutter for the various recipes, so I used an ounce of Moby Dick AAAA. Only the best of the best! I guesstimated the potency and (without sampling it beforehand) added it to the brownie recipes.
Once the brownies were all baked, I cut them into even squares and packaged them up for our 10 judges. Everyone would receive a brownie pack, try one brownie a day and would rate it based on taste, texture, aroma and potency. The winner would receive a cannabis filled gift basket!
As I was the one who baked them, I tried them first so that I could give guidance to the other judges on how much to have. Remember when I said I didn’t try the cannabutter before adding it to the recipe? I know better, but figured it would be fine. Ha! I had half of a brownie and, let me tell you, I have NEVER been so stoned. And not the fun stoned. I was SO uncomfortable. I had the spins, was convinced I couldn’t swallow and practically curled up in my partner’s lap for the next few hours. My dog didn’t even want anything to do with me.
It was my own fault, but, still, not fun. If you ever find yourself too high, check out some of our tips HERE to help you get through it. (I may or may not have been referring to my own blog post that evening!)
Of course, I made it through the evening and am here to tell the tale. What did this teach me? How NOT to make homemade edibles. Will I ever do it again? Nope! And now I get to share an amusing tale with all of you.
So, now that we know what not to do, how should you make homemade edibles?
If you don’t want to follow my lead and wind up rocking yourself to sleep at night because you’re too high, try these tips instead!
If you’re hesitant or can’t be bothered to make cannabutter or a cannabis infused oil, tinctures are a great option. They also give you the most control over the dosage. You’ll know exactly how much THC and/or CBD is in your recipe and you can calculate the per serving dose from there.
The tinctures that I usually bake with are…
900mg THC per bottle
If I’m wanting to create a THC infused dish, I always reach for our own line of tinctures. Our THC tinctures come in Sativa, Indica and Hybrid and are made from cannabis extract from local BC growers.

THC, 1:1 or CBD
Often I’ll make sleepy time drinks of baked good to enjoy in the evening. Mota’s sleep formulas consists of THC extract, CBD isolate, organic botanicals and melatonin, to help you fall asleep faster and achieve a deeper longer sleep.
Purchase HERE.
500mg and 1000mg CBD
If you’re looking to reap the healing benefits of cannabis without the high, reach for a CBD tincture. The CBDMove tincture comes in flavored and not flavored options, making it easy to use in virtually any recipe.

If you prefer to make an infused butter/oil for your recipe, the number one rule is to be sure to sample it first.
Once cooked off, have a very small, measured amount and wait 90 minutes. Gauge how high you feel. Maybe you’ve had a 10mg gummy before and the high feels similar to that. Great! Now you know the potency and you can dose your recipe accordingly.
Don’t assume that one batch will be the same as your last.
While it was an uncomfortable experiences, I now knew how much cannabutter to use in future recipes. I was also able to give the other judges a heads up before they sampled theirs, so no one else had the same experience as me!
Have you had a homemade edible experience gone wrong? No? Just me? Ok.
But in all seriousness, please share your stories with us either on here or Instagram. We would love to hear them!
