We have discussed the benefits of psilocybin on our blog many times in the past, mainly with regards to anxiety and depression, but what about addiction?
What effect does psilocybin have on treating alcohol and tobacco dependency? Is it possible to treat addiction without the assistance of rehabilitation facilities and pharmaceutical aids? According to some very promising studies, the answer is yes!
As you may remember from our other article, “The Benefits of Psilocybin“, psilocybin is known to…
Many of our customer come to us looking to alleviate the negative feelings caused by mental illness. One of our team members, D, discussed her first time trying psilocybin in a recent article, and it was the encouragement many needed to try it for themselves. Psilocybin isn’t just a trip; it is a safe and effective means of treating mental illness, and helping your brain create new, positive neural pathways.
A study conducted in 2015 looked at the impact psilocybin has on treating alcohol dependency. Participants with DSM-IV alcohol dependence received orally administered psilocybin in one or two supervised sessions. The results were overwhelmingly positive and lasted through to the 26 week check up.
While studies on the effects of psilocybin are limited, the positive results open the door for other research studies, create change in government policies, and encourage those suffering to try a new way of healing.
Perhaps the most promising of studies are those focused on treating tobacco addiction with psilocybin. A pilot study conducted in 2014 recruited 15 heavy smokers who had attempted to quit smoking numerous times before. The participants took three doses of psilocybin throughout the 15 week study and, after six months, 80% of the participants were abstinent from smoking. A follow-up study found that 16 months after the initial assessment, 60% of the participants were still abstinent. Traditional treatment options are moderately effective at best, typically resulting in a 30% success rate.
An interesting aspect of this trial is that the mystical aspect of the psilocybin experience seemed to be a requirement for smokers to quit successfully. This suggests that the spiritual and perceptual changes induced by psilocybin could be the main reason for the positive changes.
