Cannabis for ADHD Relief – ADHD, known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that often presents itself in children and early childhood, but often persists into adulthood. ADHD is something often diagnosed in children but can be diagnosed in adults as well, although not as common. It’s been estimated that 1.1 million Canadians struggle with ADHD, reported by the Center for ADHD Awareness Canada. For those who have experienced symptoms of ADHD, to say they’re not ideal is an understatement. For some, navigating everyday tasks may be difficult. Not being able to concentrate on work or school can impede work ethic and overall work completion. ADHD medication isn’t always desired as it may not work for some, and could potentially make matters worse than better. We’ve talked about the benefits of CBD in a previous Healing Co blog, but what are the benefits of CBD pertaining directly to ADHD? What are the benefits of THC pertaining to ADHD? As alternative, natural medication is being used for a variety of ailments, CBD and THC has been more commonly used to treat ADHD over prescription medication as individuals may find that prescription medication for ADHD treatment has potential adverse effects.
There are two main cannabinoids you’ll find in a Cannabis plant, THC and CBD. THC is the psychoactive component which works to provide a sense of “high”. The other cannabinoid, CBD, is the non-psychoactive component that doesn’t give you a “high” feeling, but has anti-inflammatory, pain reducing, and anxiolytic properties.
Both compounds work by interacting with our endocannabinoid system, binding to CB-1 and CB-2 receptors in our brain and nervous system. In terms of the psychoactive component THC, this compound primarily binds to CB-1 receptors in our brain. This produces a sense of euphoria and the “high” feeling that’s associated with cannabis. CBD binds very weakly if at all to CB-1 receptors which is why CBD is said to work to decrease the psychoactive elements of THC. Both CBD and THC have very similar medical benefits, despite their vast differences in effects. They both work to decrease pain, aid in the reduction of anxiety, and nausea. CBD works more to migraines whereas THC works more to reduce symptoms of low appetite and insomnia. Although there is a large difference in effect when it comes to THC and CBD, they both work in their own ways to provide insane health benefits for an array of conditions.
In terms of CBD, there isn’t a whole lot of research on the treatment of ADHD with CBD. That being said, a small study was conducted in 2017 regarding the use of CBD oil for ADHD. There was a noted insignificant improvement in overall brain function and symptom reduction, but there was an apparent improvement in areas of impulsivity and hyperactivity. Its been said that along with the common cognitive symptoms of ADHD, anxiety and depression also plays a role in the lives of those who have ADHD. CBD has shown to help mental clarity by interacting with specific brain receptors which showed to improve concentration levels. CBD oil is very common because of its anxiolytic properties, which is why CBD is said to help ADHD patients in the sense that it reduces the anxiety and depression often associated with ADHD.
THC works differently than CBD in terms of ADHD treatment in the sense that it’s said to reduce some of the more severe symptoms of ADHD which include agitation, lack of restraint, and irritability. The cause of ADHD is said to be unknown, meaning scientists aren’t quite sure what exactly contributes to a person having ADHD. That being said, scientists have observed that people with ADHD have a different level of dopamine in their brain versus neurotypical people, being that people with ADHD contain a lower level of dopamine compared to the neurotypical brain. Dopamine is responsible for the regulation of our emotions and our overall ability to think, plan, and achieve specific rewards. It’s the main component to us feeling pleasure and reward. It’s said that dopamine may have an affect on the ways in which we process thoughts, including overall memory and attention. THC has the ability to increase our dopamine levels in the reward center of our brain for a temporary amount of time. The problem with THC working to increase dopamine levels short-term, it may dull the overall release of dopamine long-term. Although THC can be used as a relief to ADHD symptoms short-term, the longer term effects may be adverse.
