Cannabis, like almost everything, is not one size fits all! When it comes to edibles, that is especially true.
Your tolerance to cannabis depends on your metabolism, your genetics, how much you’ve eaten and drank in a day, how active you are, and other contributing factors. You may be able to enjoy a 20mg gummy and your friend can only handle 10mg. That’s why it is so important to listen to your body and always wait at least 90 minutes between doses.
Let’s dive into what you should look for in an edible before discussing dosages!
There are two main things to look for when purchasing any cannabis edible and that is that the product has been lab tested and that you are purchasing from a reputable company. Thankfully, we take that guess work out when you purchase from The Healing Co.. But, if you purchase from other companies or retailers, be sure you know what you are purchasing!
You will notice that the following guidelines provide a significant range of doses. This is because every person’s tolerance is different, much like individual tolerances to alcohol or any other mind altering substance.
We always use the old adage “start low and go slow” and recommend waiting at least 90 minutes between doses. You can always take a second dose, but you can’t take it back once you’ve ingested it.
If you have never indulged in cannabis before, it’s best to take things slow. Start with 2.5 to 10 mg of an edible from a reputable company to ensure you know exactly how much you’re ingesting.
You’ve dabbled in edibles before, but don’t consider yourself a regular user. Be sure to build up slowly and start with 10 to 15 mg.
You enjoy edibles on an almost daily basis and know how much your body can handle. Start with 15 to 30 mg and build up from there.
You use cannabis daily and may do so for extreme pain management. Dosages can begin at 35 mg to relieve
symptoms as needed.
While CBD is considered non-intoxicating, it is important you still follow the “start low and go slow” rule. High doses of CBD cause drowsiness in some folks. You also want to ensure you are using your product in a cost effective manner, meaning you find the lowest dose that will provide the desired results.
For many people, 10mg of CBD is all they need in perpetuity. Try this dosage for a few days before deciding if an increase is necessary.
As mentioned above, many people find that 10mg suits them just fine, so you may never need to increase your dose. If you find you still need more relief, increase your dosage to 20mg and remain here for up to a week before adjusting further.
Depending on what you are using CBD for, you may find you need a higher dose still. Adjust to 30mg and test this dosage out for up to a week.
For those suffering from severe pain or undergoing cancer treatment, a much higher dose is required. For individuals going through chemo, we often recommend a dose of 60mg per day, split between two 30mg doses morning and evening.
